New Front Parking Lot and Safe Routes to School

Our new front parking lot will be ready for bus and student drop-off use on the first day of school. Please look carefully at the map and be prepared to follow the directions.

Please take note of the Safe Route for bikes. You will cross Happy Lane and use the new bike cutout to get safely onto the sidewalk. You will then hang a right and have a straight shot to the bike parking on the school-side of our TK building. Please note, the new bike parking slated to be on the 5th-street side of the TK building is not ready yet.

If you are dropping your child off, you MUST use the drop-off loop. There are door openers every morning who will help get your child(ren) quickly and safely out of your vehicle. The intersection of Fifth Street and River Oaks is NOT a drop-off loop. When you drop off there, stop your vehicle unexpectedly, and/or make a U-turn, you create an unsafe traffic environment for all the children trying to get to school along that road.

If you are walking your child to school, please plan to park in the neighborhood and walk in. We have more staff than we have parking spaces, so Happy Lane is often full in the morning with our staff vehicles. Plan to either park in the neighborhood before Happy Lane or go further down Fifth Street. If your child wants to enter the school through the back entrance by the two-story, then you should plan to park further down Fifth Street and walk them to the crosswalk. 

The front parking lot is for the staff. You may not park in those spots, park along the curb in the parking lot, or double-park your car behind other cars. 

I believe we can all agree that the safety of every child in Sun Valley is of utmost importance. We can work together as a community to make sure every child can safely get to and from school each day.

Back Entrance to School

Construction is still underway for the new sidewalk along 5th Avenue and the back gate ramp, which means the back gate will not be usable for a while. We know this is an important second ingress and egress point for our school community. We will be opening up the gate to the fire lane behind the second-story building so that students can still enter the campus from the back.

End-of-the-Day Pick Up Pilot

Since we now have a nice long loading zone in our new front parking lot, we are going to pilot allowing cars to drive through to pick up children. This is how the process will run:

• Cars can pull in around the buses onto the straight part of the loading zone (see graphic)
• There will be an adult (Ms. Michaelsen or me) at the front of the car line. We will ask you who you are picking up.
• If your child is there, we will help load them in your car. 
• If your child is not there, you will need to drive out of the parking lot and go around again.

For the safety of all of the children, no cars will be permitted to pass or go around other cars that are waiting in line to pick up. We highly recommend you direct your child(ren) to come immediately to the pick-up line to expedite the process.

All Digital Devices Must Stay in Backpacks While on Campus

To create a device-free learning environment, all digital devices, including cell phones, smartwatches, gizmos, etc. must be turned off and stored in students’ backpacks. Digital devices are defined as any device that can text, make phone calls, play games and/or record sounds/videos.

If a student brings a digital device to school, the following policy will be enforced.

• First time: verbal warning to student with the device returned to the backpack and off; parent phone call
• Second time and thereafter: device will be confiscated and kept in the office; parent must pick up the device after school

Please remember that Sun Valley will not be held responsible for loss or damage to any electronic device or any stolen property. We highly recommend that your child leave all valuables at home.

Medication Reminder

Students are not allowed to carry or administer medication. All medication must be stored in and administered from the office. This includes epi-pens. Please get in touch with Leslie Birnbaum at lbirnbaum@srcs.org to arrange student medication.
