Principal's Newsletter

Dear Sun Valley Community,

Four day weeks fly by on campus! Our Super Star students have been continuing to learn how to be a successful learner in the classroom by mastering the classroom routines and earning trust through community building activities. Our teachers are steadily increasing the rigor of their lessons and assignments as we build our stamina.  In the next few weeks, we will be focusing on understanding your child's current academic levels. Our district has transitioned to a new assessment system, iReady. This will replace the Fountas & Pinnell (F&P) reading levels, Reading Inventory lexile (RI) scores, and Illuminate benchmarks. Teachers across the district piloted multiple assessment systems last year and iReady was the clear favorite. Students will take diagnostic assessments in reading, writing, and math over the next 3 weeks. We look forward to sharing the information at the October conferences and setting goals for the year. Please review the attached letter with additional descriptions of the assessment tool.

We are excited to be rolling out our incredible enrichment programming at Sun Valley!  Students have already started PE with Coach Dave and Coach Taylor, Music with Ms. Tracy and Ms. Z. and Library with Ms. Reily. Next week, our students will start Art with Ms. Marnina and Ms. Jessie and Environmental Science with Ms. Maddi. Thank you to the parent volunteers that are joining us!  These enrichment classes are most successful with additional hands. PE and Environmental Science are taught outside. Please review the attached guidelines from the county for Extreme Heat and poor Air Quality.

We have a few openings for parents on School Site Council! We meet each month to discuss the Site Plan goals and other issues that impact our students. We meet once a month on Mondays from 3:45-4:45. The first meeting is on 9/18. If you are interested, please email me at kevans@srcs.org

Finally, many families still need to complete the Aeries Data Confirmation!  When I was completing the forms for my children, even I got stuck on the Contacts!  There are two new areas that need to be completed so you can save and move to the next step. Here are video tutorials for completing the entire process.
Video Tutorial (English - go to Minute 3 for the Contacts) (Spanish - go to minute 9 for the Contacts)

Sincerely,
Kim Evans, Principal
